Fitzroy Balcony Garden

We updated this sunny terrace in Fitzroy to transform a small urban area into a multi-functional sanctuary. Our goal was to create a space that felt private and restorative while meeting the different gardening styles of a couple. One partner enjoys the tending to their extensive ornamental plant collection, while the other is passionate about growing their own food.
To make the most of the limited footprint, we focused on smart, lightweight solutions:
Custom Joinery: We designed a storage cabinet that serves two purposes by hiding the air conditioning unit and providing a dedicated potting bench for garden tasks.
Vertical Foodscaping: Above the potting bench, we installed a vertical vegetable garden to maximise growing space without cluttering the floor.
Refined Planting: We used a palette of lightweight pots and carefully chosen plants to create a lush, layered feel that remains easy to manage.
This project shows how even the smallest terrace can support food production and personal wellbeing through thoughtful, sensory-aware design.
